The 12 Step Program in Christian Drug Rehab

12-step programs and Christian drug rehab both offer a path out of addiction that involve using the power of faith.

Members of groups like AA turn to a higher power to help them break away from addiction. Christian rehabs also you to use the power of your faith, but they are more specific about the nature of this higher power. The combination of the 12-Steps with a Christ-centered approach can be very effective.

Christian Drug Rehab 12 Step Programs

There are many different types of 12-Step program, and the organization is not aligned with any one particular religion. There are individual 12-step groups that are focused on the teachings of Christ. Even the meetings that are not strictly Christian will still use aspects of this religion such as the Lord’s Prayer.

About 94 per cent of inpatient rehabilitation programs in the US offer the 12-step program in one form or another. This spiritual approach to recovery has worked for many people, and it is well respected. There are now many Christian rehabilitation programs that use the 12-steps alongside the teachings of Jesus.

Roots of the 12 Steps Program in Christian Drug Rehab

It is easy to understand why the 12 steps are a good fit for Christian rehab. This is because these steps were greatly influenced by the Oxford Group – an evangelistic Christian group that sought to help people escape suffering by performing spiritual practices such as making amends and complete trust in God.

The founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (Bill W.) attended the Oxford Group, and he used their teachings to help him build a life free of addiction. The influence of this Christian fellowship is obvious in the 12-Steps, and it is this that has made the program so successful.

How to Use the 12-Step Program in Christian Drug Rehab

Those Christian rehabs that use the 12-steps combine it with teachings from the Bible. The idea is to allow clients to benefit from the fellowship and effectiveness of this program while still keeping things Christ-centered. The 12-steps are used to compliment the teachings of Jesus and not to replace them in any way.

The key to getting the most out of the 12-Step program in a Christian rehab is to actually apply this program. Learning about the steps is not enough – action is required for there to be any real benefit. Working the program includes things like making amends and seeking through prayer and meditation to understand the will of God.

Christian Drug Rehab without the 12-Steps

There is no doubt that the 12-steps have helped many people break away from addiction, but this approach does not work for everyone. This is why there are many Christian drug and alcohol rehabs that prefer to provide programs that focus more on factors such as:

• Christian fellowship meetings
• Support from the Christian community
• A program based purely on the teachings of the Bible
• Mentorship by a Christian mentor
• Bible study classes

It would be unfair to say to claim that Christian rehab is superior to a Christian 12-step program – or vice versa. Both of these programs have something to offer, and it is up to each individual to decide which is going to be the best option in their case.

Find the Help You Need at Christian Rehab

Your faith can allow you to break away from addiction and build life, and this can happen with a 12-step program or a more Christ-centered program. There is almost certainly going to be a Christian drug rehab that is capable of providing all the resources you need to break free and live free in the care of God.
