Effects of Heroin Addiction

There are many effects that may occur from a heroin addiction. When heroin enters the body it seeks out receptors throughout the brain and the intestinal track. The molecules in heroin attach to these types of receptors and set off a variety of chemical reactions. The chemical reactions produced are the same a person might feel if they are overwhelmed with excitement about something but heroin exaggerates this reaction and goes on and on. This is the rush experienced by someone with a heroin addiction and it can be incredibly addictive. The heroin user might experience warmth and tingling spreading through their skin, extreme relaxation and will develop a dry mouth. Heroin use on a normal basis will cause the user to become accustomed to the feeling of that initial rush. Heroin use can also cause a great amount of damage to the users central nervous system. Heroin is so powerful that it can do damage with just one dose. Over time a heroin addiction will destroy the users systems in the body including their brain. They will have trouble recognizing patterns, dealing with spatial concepts and remember things. People who inject heroin are open to health problems such as collapsed veins, abscesses, infections in their hearts or lungs, and blood borne infections such as aids or hepatitis. Anyone who uses heroin is risking long-term addiction problems. The users body becomes used to the constant presence of heroin, and when the addict tries to stop their body goes into withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms can be mild such as sweating and tooth grinding, but they can also be severe and include vomiting, nausea, seizures, and even death. Most people with a heroin addiction are trapped for decades because they experience withdrawal symptoms between each hit. These symptoms scare the user and they end up returning to heroin to make the symptoms go away.
