Physical Effects and Reactions of Crack Cocaine Addiction
Physical effects of crack cocaine addiction can be very serious in some cases. Crack cocaine greatly alters the brain chemistry immediately after ingestion of the drug. This causes a sense of indescribable euphoria and results in a feeling of supreme confidence, heightened alertness, rapidly increasing energy, loss of appetite, and potential paranoia. These are created by the drug because it releases a large amount of dopamine which creates the euphoric feeling. The high normally lasts from five to ten minutes then causes dopamine levels to drop which leaves the user in a depressed state of mind. Some side effects a person may experience when they use crack cocaine include constricted blood vessels, dilated pupils, increased body temperature, and heart rate. When crack cocaine is taken in higher doses bizarre behavior usually follows the drug abuse and will lead to violent behavior. Large amount of the drug can cause tremors, twitches, as well as extreme states of paranoia. A toxic reaction can occur as well that resemble amphetamine poisoning. Most deaths from crack cocaine addiction are related to cardiac arrest, seizures, and respiratory arrest.
